Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G AF-S DX Review

Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G AF-S DX Review by Alan Trammel

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Another stunning performer!  This lens has consistently put out superb images.  Purchased on Craigslist, I would say this lens is the DX equivalent of my Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8 FX lens both in image quality and focal length.  (25-82mm equivalent)

Nikon D500 + Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G AF-S DX @ ISO 200, 1.3 sec., f/16 @ 22mm.

Robustly built with weather sealing, this lens is beach and mountain ready.  Not that I rough house any of my gear, but this lens has definitely taken some dings while climbing up rocks with it slung over my shoulder with no ill effects.

It is a heavy little beast and I wouldn’t suggest it for touring a city during mid-day adventures.  For mountain hikes you definitely need to be cognitive of weight when factoring in your total payload for the day.

While it doesn’t have VR (Vibration Reduction) to me it’s a non-issue as I am typically shooting landscapes on a tripod.  If I am shooting DX and it’s close to sunrise or sunset time, best believe this lens is on my camera.  I simply love the images it produces.

The first “pro” grade lens I purchased, this lens has stood the test of time over the last ten years.
