Review: Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR (Version 1)

Nikon AF-S 70-200 f/2.8 VR (Version 1) Review by Alan Trammel.

NOT RECOMMENDED.

First let me start by praising the build quality of this lens!  It’s big, heavy and built like a medieval suit of armor.  No worries about this lens getting banged up…throw it on the front seat, back seat floor board or in the trunk.  In a sticky situation it could serve as an improvised self-defense device.

Optically it just never impressed.  I kept this lens longer than I should have, probably because it’s lack of WOW power didn’t really show until I started getting more optically superb pieces of glass.

I have no problem hauling around a heavy lens that produces stunning images.  Every time I started to pack for a photo outing this lens just kept getting left behind.   Instead I would reach for the Nikon AF-S  70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR (Version 1) which seemed to be better in every category.

Sold on Craigslist.
